The long awaited return to the UFC octagon by Nate Diaz was not a let down as he won with an impressive unanimous decision victory over Anthony “Showtime” Pettis at UFC 241 at the Honda Centre, Anaheim, California.
There didn’t appear to be an “cage rust” due to Diaz’s absence from the octagon and he was confident and focused from the start, even after the three year gap since his last fight.
Anthony “Showtime” Pettis, a former WEC and UFC lightweight champion, has looked impressive in his last outing at welterweight (170lbs) with a spectacular explosion superman punch knockout victory against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.
But whilst we saw moments of flair and spinning kicks from Anthony Pettis, Nate Diaz controlled the range and the tempo of the fight - turning it into a dirty boxing match at close quarters.
Nate Diaz nearly finished the fight in the third round, but Anthony Pettis managed to recover enough to turn it into a bjj grappling exchange with submission attempts and reversals to keep the fans entertained.
After the fight Nate Diaz expressed his desire to fight Jorge Masvidal - a fight I think most MMA would love to see happen in the near future.
